Risk training part 1 and risk training part 2 (skid)
In order to get a Swedish B driving licence you have to undergo a risk training that consists of two parts, simply called part 1 and part 2.
Part 1 of the risk training is a training that is mainly theoretical and is mandatory to undergo in order to get the Swedish B driving licence. Part 2 is a practical training, namely a skid training.
Risk training part 1
During part 1 of the risk training you will learn about risks that are involved with the use of alcohol and drugs, the risks of tiredness while driving and other risky behaviours.
The course should be at least 3 hours (normally with a break in between) and most driving schools offer this course. The cost of the Risk 1 course can vary alot, but it will likely cost around 700 sek.
There is no test during this training, so it’s almost impossible to fail the training. However, in order to pass for the training you do need to actually have showed proper engagement during the training and you should have participated actively in group discussions. Once you have completed the course, it is valid for 5 years.
After the part 1 of the risk training you should have knowledge of these subjects;
- The risks, consequences, impacts and prevention of alcohol, drugs and tiredness related to driving (teaching about this is the training’s main goal)
- The rules regarding tiredness related to driving
- The rules regarding drunk driving
- How the differences for risks are between different demographics (for instance younger vs older people or men vs women)
- How your personal attitude and your behaviour (mainly dangerous attitudes and behaviours) can impact for instance your own driving ability and/or the entire traffic situation
- How having passengers in the car, talking on the phone, stress and other similar distractive circumstances while driving most likely impact your driving ability negatively and can even lead to you becoming a dangerous driver.
Frequently asked questions
How long is part 1 of the risk training valid?

Is part 1 of the risk training mandatory?
Yes, both part 1 and part 2 of the risk training are mandatory.
Do I first have to do part 1 of the risk training before I do part 2?
No, you do not have to complete Risk training 1 first, if you like you could complete the Risk training 2 (skid / halkbana) first. However, it is advised and very common to do part 1 first.
How much does part 1 of the risk training cost?
Part 1 of the risk training varies but it will likely cost around 700 sek.
Where can I do part 1 of the risk training?

No, there will be no test taken, neither during nor at the end of part 1 of the risk training.
Is the risk training, or only for instance part 1, the same for the car as for the motorcycle?
No, both part 1 and part 2 of the risk training for the car and motorcycle driving licence are different.
Risk training part 2; Skid training (or halkbana)
During part 2 of the risk training you will learn how you can handle the car during difficult and risky road conditions. These are mainly slippery road conditions, which is the more practical side of the training. You will experience how it feels to lose control of the car in a controlled environment on a slippery surface.
In Sweden slippery road conditions are very common, the aim of this training is therefore to teach you how it feels when the car starts to skid and how you should react and manoeuvre when it happens. You will also learn about speed, safety and driving at different road and weather conditions.
This training takes about 3 to 4 hours and you do not need to have any prior knowledge before attenting this training. However, it’s higly recommend to be experienced in driving, and even be at a stage where you’re ready to do the practical driving test, because you should not have issues with actually driving a car. Normally your driving instructor evaluates whether or not you’re ready for this training. It’s also advised to first complete part 1 of the risk training, but it’s not a requirement.
The cost of this training may vary a bit, but it usually costs around 2000 sek. Some driving schools offer part 2 of the risk training. And even if a driving school doesn’t offer for this training themselves, they often collaborate with other educators who offer those. Once you succesfully completed the training it’s valid for 5 years.
In order to pass this training there are no specific requirements, although you do need to have actively parcipitated during the training and followed all the given instructions. This means that you have listened actively and showed engagement and also have done everything that has been asked from you.
During the training there is also a part where a skid should deliberately go wrong, in order to let you experience how it is when losing control of the car and what overestimating your own abilities can result in.
During this training there are basically two parts; theory, exercises and the actual skid training. The training normally starts with an introduction and an alcohol test.
These are two excercises that often also are being offered and that are voluntary;
- hanging upside down in a car or similar equipment where you experience how to get out of a car that is upside down
- experience how it is to crash, where you will go down a small ramp with at a very low speed (7-8 km/h) while being securely strapped onto the chair
Note that these exercises are NOT mandatory, therefore you can choose to not participate in these if you don’t want to.
The skid training normally consists of these elements;
- several braking excercises, where you will experience the differences between dry and slippery road surfaces, and also the differences between having for instance the ABS brakes switched on or off
- slalom driving, where you drive between cones
- driving and turning in slippery bends
- experience the impact of fast accelarations
- avoiding collisions, where you will be put in a situation where you will be forced to manoeuvre in a proper way to prevent a collision
