The learner’s permit and supervisor training (introduction course)
Learner’s permit
To start driving lessons and to take the practical test, you need a valid learner's permit, whether it's your first license or another type of licence (e.g., motorcycle, bus).
Certain factors like criminal records, drug/alcohol history, or some medical conditions can affect your eligibility to getting this permit. Examples for not getting a learner’s permit can include severe ADHD/ADD, certain diseases, illegal drug use, or severe past traffic violations.
To obtain the permit, you'll need to do a vision test (about 200 SEK), but the permit itself is free. Some opticians and driving schools can digitally submit test results to the Swedish Transport Agency, which can speed up the process.
When applying, you need to provide your personal details and complete a 16-question health declaration, this you can do on the Swedish Transport Agency’s website.
Note that you must always carry the permit with you during driving lessons.
Supervisor training (introduction course)
To take private driving lessons, both the supervisor and student must complete a supervisor training (or introduction course), which is valid for 5 years after completion.
The cost of this training is around 400 to 600 SEK per person and the duration is at least 3 hours. The minimum age for participating this training is 15 years and 9 months.
A supervisor must:
- be at least 24 years old
- have a valid Swedish or EES driving license
- have attended the course in the last 5 years
- have held the license for 5 years in the past 10 years
A supervisor can supervise up to 5 students but must be approved for each individually. The supervisor and student don’t need to attend the course together but it's recommended.
Note that the supervisor must have attend the training before submitting their application. This course is available at most driving schools.
However, even if someone meets the supervisor requirements, that person can still be denied if for instance:
- His/Her license was revoked for more than three months in the last three years due to serious traffic violations (e.g. severe speeding)
- His/Her license was revoked in the last three years due to drunk driving, serious crimes, or if he/she is considered unreliable regarding sobriety
- His/Her license was valid in the last three years but under conditions with a breathalyzer lock
- He/She already has approvals for five other students
