Three-second rule

The three-second rule is used to determine a safe driving distance between your car and the car in front of you. You start counting when the car in front of you passes a fixed point (for instance a tree or road sign). Stop counting once you yourself reach that point. If it takes you less than 3 seconds to cover that distance, it means that the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you is too short and needs to be increased.
