A motorway is a road that is built safer than other more common roads. Motorways have two separate carriageways and usually several lanes in each carriageway, they are intended to make itpossible to drive at higher speeds. Since there never is oncoming traffic (and because, among other things, pedestrians, cyclists and mopeds are not allowed), motorways are among the safest roads there are.
