The merging principle (sometimes referred to as the zipper rule) means that drivers cooperate where for instance two lanes come together into one lane and that every other car may drive. This means that every other driver is allowed to drive and that the drivers leave a gap so that the driver from the other road can easily drive onto the road. This then requires good mutual adjustment.
